Why We Booked the Chocolate Amatller Experience
If you’re planning your visit to Barcelona or have already arrived in the city, you have probably realized that most things in Barcelona are very expensive these days.
I am always on the lookout for more affordable and fun things to do in Barcelona.
My friend and I had reserved tickets for the Chocolate Amatller Experience for a Saturday morning in January, right after visiting the Palau de la Música Catalana.
The Palau de la Música Catalana is the stunning modernist concert hall in the Sant Pere neighborhood, just a short walk from El Born.
After a week of pretty good weather in Barcelona, the weekend turned into a rainy, grey January day. A chocolate tasting sounded like the perfect plan to escape the weather!
My husband and I also really like Chocolate Amatller, so I was extra curious to learn more about its story.

The Chocolate Amatller Experience: My Honest Review
Now let’s break the review down a bit more and look at what makes the Chocolate Amatller Experience worth it, and what you can expect from each part of the chocolate tasting!
What Makes the Chocolate Amatller Experience Worth It?
Before I take you through each part of the experience, here are the reasons that I would recommend the Chocolate Amatller Experience to a friend (and on my blog!).
The Amatller Chocolate Experience is an Affordable Activity in Barcelona
At around €15 per person, the Chocolate Amatller Experience is one of the most affordable guided activities in Barcelona.
You get a short film, a chocolate tasting, a workshop, and a hot chocolate for less than the price of a lunch in the city center.
It’s definitely not going to replace your lunch, but what I’m saying is that it is pretty good value for Barcelona!
The Groups Are Small and Personal
The Chocolate Amatller Experience takes a maximum of 10 people, so it never feels like a crowded tourist attraction.
When my friend and I did the experience in January, we were actually expecting more people, but when the clock hit 11:30, it was only my friend and me. So, that meant that we had a private chocolate tasting with our hostess, Sam!
The Perfect Rainy Day Activity in Barcelona
The Chocolate Amatller Experience is fully indoors, and the store is warm and cozy.
If you are visiting Barcelona in the winter, or the weather forecast suddenly turns grey, this is hands down one of the best things to do in Barcelona on a rainy day.

What to Expect: A Step-by-Step Breakdown
We have talked a bit about why I liked the Chocolate Amatller Experience. Now let’s look at what actually happens during the chocolate tasting, step by step.
Arriving at the Chocolate Amatller Store in El Born
We arrived in El Born a little before our 11:30 start time, so we wandered around the narrow streets of the neighborhood for a bit.
When it was time, we went inside the Chocolate Amatller store, and Sam, our hostess for the Chocolate Amatller Experience, greeted us at the entrance.
Inside the store, there were small lockers where we could leave our winter coats and backpacks, which I really appreciated on a wet day.
The Chocolate Amatller store itself is gorgeous! The interior is designed to look like an old-fashioned shop, and it’s actually located just a few meters from where the original Chocolate Amatller business started back in 1797.

Part 1: The Film About Barcelona and Chocolate Amatller
The first part of the Chocolate Amatller Experience was a short film in a small auditorium at the back of the store.
The film shortly tells a bit of history about Barcelona and Chocolate Amatller. The story of Chocolate Amatller starts in 1797 when a small chocolate workshop was founded by the Catalan chocolatier Gabriel Amatller.
You are not allowed to take pictures or videos inside the auditorium, but it is a really nice little space with comfortable seating.
The film was super nicely done, and my friend and I had a good laugh at some of the stories!
Part 2: The Chocolate Tasting
After the film, we started the actual chocolate tasting.
Our hostess Sam gave us different chocolates from Chocolate Amatller to try, and she guided us on how to taste chocolate properly. She asked us what we thought was inside each chocolate and what flavors we could pick up.
In my opinion, Chocolate Amatller is good-quality chocolate, and the guided tasting made me notice flavors I would normally just eat my way past.
My personal favorite was the chocolate with cava, called Chocolate Marc de Cava Flower Pralines. Cava is a sparkling wine produced in Catalonia, a bit like the Spanish version of champagne.
The chocolate with cava is just super yummy, and it is probably one of my favorite chocolates ever!

Part 3: Making Our Own Chocolate From Cacao Beans
In the second part of the Chocolate Amatller Experience, we got to make our own chocolate!
Sam gave us some cacao beans, and we had to mash the cacao beans until they turned into a chocolate paste.
Then we could add sugar and cinnamon ourselves to make the paste taste like chocolate.
We had so much fun with this part of the Chocolate Amatller Experience. My friend even got me to finish making her chocolate, because apparently I had more of a feeling for making chocolate than she did!

Part 4: Traditional Spanish Hot Chocolate
In the last part of the Chocolate Amatller Experience, we got to try hot chocolate made with Chocolate Amatller chocolate.
The hot chocolate was served in a special cup called a mancerina. A mancerina is a traditional Spanish chocolate cup set into a saucer with a raised ring in the middle, which holds the cup firmly in place.
Sam told us that this is a very typical way to drink hot chocolate in Spain, and the story behind the cup made us laugh.
According to the story Sam told us, the Spanish nobleman Marquis of Mancera, who was the Spanish viceroy of Peru in the 1600s, was obsessed with hot chocolate made in South America.
However, he had hands that shook so much that the hot chocolate kept spilling when he wanted to serve it to his visitors. To not have the viceroy embarrassed by spilling chocolate on his guests, a special cup was designed: the mancerina.
After enjoying our hot chocolate and chatting a bit more with Sam, our lovely hostess, our Chocolate Amatller Experience had come to an end!

Shopping in the Chocolate Amatller Store
Afterward, we browsed around the Chocolate Amatller store for a while.
The store is free to enter, so you can also pop in to shop, even if you do not book the Chocolate Amatller Experience.
The chocolate from Chocolate Amatller makes a lovely souvenir from Barcelona, and some of the chocolates are even packed in beautiful Art Deco-style tin boxes.
I bought some chocolate for my husband because we both really like Chocolate Amatller (of course it was the cava chocolate I bought for him!).

What to Keep in Mind Before Booking the Chocolate Amatller Experience
The Chocolate Amatller Experience is short, at around 40 to 45 minutes, so I recommend you combine it with a walk around El Born or a visit to the Palau de la Música Catalana, just like we did.
Another thing to keep in mind is that you need to book the Chocolate Amatller Experience in advance, because the groups are small and there is limited capacity.
Also, the chocolate tasting is not suitable for people with nut allergies, and it is not recommended for children under five, so check this before booking if you are traveling as a family.
Lastly, (and very importantly!) there are two Chocolate Amatller stores in Barcelona. The Chocolate Amatller Experience takes place at the store on Plaça de les Olles in El Born, not at the shop next to La Pedrera on Carrer de Provença! So, I strongly recommend that you double-check the address you put into your map before you go!

Final Thoughts: Is the Chocolate Amatller Experience Worth It?
Yes, definitely! For me, the Chocolate Amatller Experience was very much worth it, and the Chocolate Amatller store in El Born is a beautiful hidden gem in Barcelona.
What I liked most was how personal the Chocolate Amatller Experience felt. Because it was just my friend and me, Sam had time for all our questions, and it felt more like a private chocolate class than a tourist activity.
It was also really fun to finally learn the story behind a chocolate that my husband and I already loved. Mashing cacao beans by hand gave me a whole new respect for what goes into a single chocolate bar!
My friend and I visited on a rainy Saturday in January, and the Chocolate Amatller Experience was the perfect break from the chilly and grey day outside.
The only downside is that it is over quite quickly, so think of the Chocolate Amatller Experience as a sweet break in your day in El Born rather than the main event.
