When you think and hear about Cuba, what first comes into your mind is pictures of classic mid-century cars and colonial-styled colorful houses. Am I right? However, there is blowing a changing wind over Cuba, and as the capital, Havana is the front-runner for change. The neighborhood of Vedado seems to be a melting pot for the changes visible in Cuba. When I studied Spanish at the linguistic faculty at the University of Havana nearly three years ago, I spent a lot of time in Vedado, and now coming back last year, I could for sure see the changes. Here are just some of the new modernized initiatives blowing in…

A Guide to More Authentic Ways of Exploring Havana

    April 2, 2017 /

Havana is often compared to stepping inside a time bobble. The 50s cars on the streets, the old colonial houses, and people sitting in their doorway chatting to their neighbors.  Life has another speed here. There are many things we don’t know about how life is in Cuba. And when visiting Havana for the first time (or maybe even the second), it can also be a bit difficult to figure out how to get an authentic experience of Cuban everyday life.  With this guide, I want to try to give you some ideas on how to experience Havana in a more authentic way.  Despite the fact that I can hardly call…

How to use a local taxi in Havana

    April 2, 2017 /

Cuba’s properly most well-known and popular asset is the old mid-century colorful cars scrolling the streets throughout the island. A classic tourist activity in Havana is to rent one of those iconic cars, and go for a drive on the seaside drive, el Malecón. However, cars are not only for tourists. The old 50s cars are used all around the island like a local Cuban taxi or taxis colectivos, or las máquinas as the Cubans call them. And you can easily jump on for a ride too! In this post, I explain how to use las máquinas de la Habana. Ready? Let’s go for a drive! Basics about the local taxis in Havana The…

10 Things Nobody Tells You About Cuba

    March 19, 2017 /

There is a Cuba underneath the vibrant colonial houses and the American 50s cars. It is a Cuba that we don’t see with the bare eye. A Cuba that most visitors don’t see and don’t know about. So, to help you get a deeper insight into Cuba, and everyday life here. Therefore, I put together this list of things I believe nobody tells you about Cuba: After saying more than four months in Cuba, I believe I have seen a thing or two. However, there are so many more things unknown in Cuba. So, if you have anything to add, an experience, or anything, please share it in the comments!…

🚗🇦🇷Everyday moments from Buenos Aires🇦 🚗🇦🇷Everyday moments from Buenos Aires🇦🇷 🚗

When I posted tourist content about Buenos Aires, I always get complains from Argentines stating that it doesn’t relate to their reality. And when I share that we decided to move from Buenos Aires, I tend to get questions from foreigners about why… So, I believe it’s same to share a little bit about why:

ECONOMY & INFLATION - Argentine economy has been a roller coaster for many year but recent years has been increasingly bad. To mention one of the many things affecting Argentina: inflation. Inflation means that the salary for an average person decreases its value over the cause of just a couple of months. Companies does adjust employees salary for inflation every now and then. But it mostly doesn’t add up in the long run and the employees’ purchase power over all has decreased. For you to get an idea, my last salary adjustment for inflation in Argentina before we left was of 50%… It might seem like a nice raise. But the estimated yearly inflation rate is around 100%?! Many Argentines are struggling to make ends met!

VIOLENCE & AGGRESSION - The tight economic situation also affects other aspects of everyday life. In my opinion, many people (especially in Buenos Aires) are on the edge. Getting into arguments over stupid things in the street, answering badly to one another… Not to mention the extremes of pickpocketing and robbing (something I have been fortunate enough to never experience first hand). In general, the negativity and verbal violence in Buenos Aires was really getting to me at the end. When visiting Buenos Aires and Argentina in general, you might not experience this or realize it as many people are properly still more open than what most of us are used to from our home country.

ACCESS TO PRODUCTS - This might seems like the most superficial reason but it does have some truth to it. Taxes, tariffs, and import restrictions make it hard to get certain things in Argentina. Or what you can get is extremely expensive. There are so many things people in other countries take for granted, that’s hard to get in Argentina.
